Do veneers hurt? What you feel at every step

It's the number-one fear before deciding. The short answer: the procedure is done with local anesthesia, and most patients only notice some sensitivity for a few days. Here's every step, no sugar-coating.

Step 1 of 7

What would you like to improve about your smile?

Choose all that apply.

The process, visit by visit

01

Evaluation and design

Exam, photos and a 3D scan. Nothing hurts: your teeth aren't touched. You see the simulation of your new smile and approve it.

02

Preparation

Under local anesthesia, a minimal layer of enamel is polished so the veneer doesn't look bulky. You feel pressure and vibration, not pain. You leave with temporaries.

03

Placement

We check color and shape, adjust and bond. It's usually done with little or no anesthesia and ends with a bite check.

Most cases are completed in 2 to 3 visits, depending on complexity.

How much of the tooth is reshaped?

For a conventional porcelain veneer, a very thin layer of enamel is removed — usually a fraction of a millimeter. It's little, but it's permanent: that's why veneers are a long-term commitment and why we plan the design before preparing anything.

The first few days: what's normal

  • Sensitivity to cold or heat for a few days
  • Slightly irritated gums where we worked
  • A feeling that your teeth “feel different” when you bite, which fades as you get used to them

An over-the-counter pain reliever is usually enough; your dentist will tell you which one is right for you. You can go back to work the same day.

Call us if pain gets worse instead of better, if you feel a bump when biting, or if sensitivity doesn't improve after a couple of weeks. More in tooth sensitivity: when it's normal.

If you're afraid of the dentist

Tell us at your first visit. We explain each step before doing it, stop whenever you ask and plan visits at your pace. Nobody should sit in the chair without knowing what's going to happen.
